Alex Goodsell Christian Education/Pastoral Care​ Alex Goodsell has served as Assistant and Associate Pastor at Evangel since August 2005. He is originally from Atlanta, Ga., but moved to Alabama to attend the University of Alabama, receiving his degree in Business Management. After becoming a Christian out of college in 1992, he worked in sales for six years, but was called into the ministry in 1998, and attended Beeson Divinity School, graduating in 2001 with an MDIV. Previously, he was the Singles Pastor at Briarwood PCA. He was ordained in the PCA in 2003. Alex is married to Amy and they have three daughters. Maginnis faithfully served Evangel as Associate Pastor since 2007, and was previously Evangel's Youth Director for eight years. David served as the Student Minister at Calvary Baptist Church in Savannah, Georgia from 1996-1999 where he met his wife, Hester. After leaving Savannah, David attended Beeson Divinity School where he received his MDIV degree in 2003. David was ordained in the PCA in January of 2007. In fact, James tells us, “...count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds....” (James 1:2 ESV). Because we live in a culture counter to God’s Word, much of the support and influence in our lives come from sources that do not align with God’s Word. When we try to solve our problems based on the world’s solutions, we do not receive lasting relief. Our trials can seem overwhelming and unending. So, if I’m a Christian, why am I still struggling—maybe with the same problem—and how do I get relief? That’s where biblical counseling may be able to offer hope and help. As biblical counselors, we believe the Bible is “breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV). Doesn’t that sound like a good place to develop tools to learn how to deal with anxiety, depression, anger, relationship issues—trials of various kinds? What does a biblical counseling session look like? The sessions are confidential and free of cost. Depending on each individual situation, we meet for one hour each week, for a period of several weeks or several months. We spend time discussing your situation and we talk about how we can use the Bible to renew our thinking, learning “to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” (Ephesians 4:23-24 ESV). Basically, biblical counseling is learning how to apply God’s Word to the situations in our lives to enable us to become more like Christ. Fellowship Activities In Acts we read that the early church continued steadfastly not only in the apostle’s doctrine, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers, but in fellowship as well. Therefore, we see that fellowship and a sense of community was an essential ingredient to the vitality and growth of the early church. Although Evangel Youth Ministry is not an “activity driven” youth group, we do believe that it is crucial to provide regular opportunities for students to interact with each other and with their church family. Each month we offer fun activities for youth to participate in such as Christian concerts, scavenger hunts, Six Flags, and other fun trips. Parents are always encourages to come along with their youth whenever possible. These outings offer parents quality time not only with their own children, but also with other children in the church. Evangel Youth Ministry exists to encourage and aid Junior and Senior High students in their pursuit to glorify and enjoy God. We are committed to raising up a new generation of Christian leaders who are prepared to live for the Gospel. It is our aim to encourage the application of the Gospel to all areas of students’ lives and to equip them to become disciple-makers. We use worship and Bible studies, discipleship groups, mission opportunities, and fellowship activities as we seek to accomplish those goals. All of this is done with the passionate desire to raise up teenagers who reflect the image of Christ in the world to the praise of God. At Evangel Youth Ministry, the Bible is the foundation of everything we do. Every Wednesday from 6:15-7:30 pm, Junior and Senior High students gather at the Gym for worship, Bible study, and small group discussions. On Sundays from 5:00-6:00 pm, discipleship groups meet at the Gym for deeper Bible study, with various study options available to suit everyone’s needs. Youth Praise & Worship The Evangel Youth Praise Team is a dynamic, youth-led worship group that plays a pivotal role in leading the Evangel Youth Group every Wednesday night. Before diving into a time of prayer, teaching, and fellowship, the team leads their peers in heartfelt praise and worship. This team provides an opportunity for young people to use their musical talents to glorify God while fostering a spirit of worship within the youth community.
